British, A Blenheim Spaniel, Oil on Canvas, William Webb, c.1825

This is an early work by William Webb; he would later move toward painting with a level of hyper-realistic—nearly microscopic—detail that was a hallmark of the Pre-Raphaelite movement.

This piece, while still leaning toward realism, also has a lovely soft-focused-ness about it, making it feel like maybe—just maybe—you could walk up and give this frisky li’l friend a hug.
